W,O,W, (Word of the Week) Vibrato

Vibrato ~ A rapid, slight variation in pitch in singing or playing some musical instruments, producing a stronger or richer tone.
Using the word “Vibrato” in a sentence ~ “There is much debate as to whether wiggling the key on a piano will cause vibrato.”
Call Music Rhapsody to schedule a free music class for your child and you will both get to learn Italian words like this during the weekly joyful music making!

W.O.W. (Word of the Week)

Legato ~ To play in a slow, smooth and even style with no noticeable interruption between notes.
Staccato ~ To play short, detached notes. Marked by short, clear-cut playing or singing of tones or chords.
Using the word “Legato” in a sentence ~ The piano doesn’t always need to sound percussive and can also make a singing, legato sounding tone.
Using the word “Staccato” in a sentence ~ The woodpecker moves from tree to tree in search of insects, drumming a staccato beat on the tall trees' trunks.
Lynn Kleiner’s new song “The Snail and the Mouse” is a perfect demonstration of legato and staccato working together and how they can be used to describe the personality or characteristic of an animal. The slow, smooth snail is used to indicate legato and the quick, sharp mouse is used to demonstrate staccato.
Music Rhapsody is an early childhood Orff music program so in our fun music classes for kids of all ages, we often use metallophones “metals”, which produce a nice, long sound – to demonstrate the meaning of legato.  We use xylophones “woods”, which produce a quick short sound - to demonstrate the meaning of staccato!

W.O.W. (Word of the Week) Fermata

Fermata ~ To hold a tone or rest held beyond the written value at the discretion of the performer.
Using the word “Fermata” in a sentence ~ The organ performer was taught to stop playing at a fermata mark until the reverberation was almost gone before continuing to play.
All of our Music Rhapsody kids love the song Silly Sam from Kids Make Music, Babies Make Music Too!  Just like Silly Sam gets to decide how long to hide behind the rock, the ‘conductor’ of the song gets to decide also!  This is a simple and effective way to demonstrate the meaning of the word “fermata” while also giving the children a chance to have control over the song by allowing them to decide just how long to wait before that sneaky snake Silly Sam comes out and shakes his tail!

Baby Music!

Did you know that scientific research has shown that by the time your baby is six months developed in utero, he or she has already begun to hear sounds in and around their cozy little womb?!
And what sound is as clear as can be?  Mother’s voice!
By the time a baby is born it recognizes its mother’s voice (and fathers too if he had been speaking to mommy’s belly!)
Now here’s a little food for thought – If you sing everyday and listen to music while you are pregnant -  say, in the car or at home, your little growing miracle can hear it too…which means that when he or she is born, your baby is already hard-wired to recognize and respond to this music!
Just by knowing these simple little facts, you are more knowledgeable than a majority of expecting mothers out there when it comes to early music enrichment…why not take the next crucial step towards encouraging your baby’s already budding appreciation for music?
Call us at Music Rhapsody and find out about all the exciting and stimulating classes we offer for children as young as three months old!
If you’d like to start as early as possible with your newborn, we even have a DVD: “Babies Make Music” that will give you wonderful activities to enjoy together at home starting from day one!
As a parent, you will never regret investing in your little ones education – no matter what age you begin! (and you can never start too early!)  We know what a gift early childhood music education is and our parents and students do too – (it’s no wonder that we have former students coming with their little ones!)
